Concentrated, rich Gewurztraminer !

Sipp Mack Alsace Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives 2015 FR-BIO-01

Concentrated, rich Gewurztraminer !
  • The vintage
  • The 2014 vintage was marked by varied climates during the growing season and the development of the Suzukii fruit fly.

Winter was mild. A spring heat wave encouraged early bud break and flowering. The grapes set well and an early harvest was predicted. Lack of water and a cool August slowed maturation and kept acid levels high. These mild temperatures encouraged a rapid development of the Suzukii fruit flies. Their fondness for red fruits like Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris created the absolute necessity for precise sorting and rigorous clarification of all the incoming musts. In certain fields, 30% of the harvest was lost.

Crémant harvest began on Sept 5th with the rest beginning around September 22nd.
Vendanges Tardives were picked the first week of October.
  • Terroir
  • Essentially calcareous-clay
  • In the vineyard
  • Our domaine is certified BIO by Ecocert France since 2013. Our goal is to foster soil enrichment with cover crops, composts, mulching and minimum tillage. We adapt cover crops to our local rainfall. When abundant, we let the grasses grow. When particularly dry, we till the soil or use the rolofaca which bends the grasses and creates a mulch. Grapes are hand harvested in early October.
  • Winemaking
  • Grapes are placed in pneumatic presses by gravity and gently pressed for 3-6 hrs to preserve maximum varietal flavors and aromas. Juices are then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks on fine lees. Sterile cartridge filtration and bottling takes place in August.
